Spanish painter Pablo Ruiz Picasso (1881–1973) continues to be one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He painted realism combined with expressionism. He was a co-founder of the Cubist movement. Picasso also incorporated collage and 3-dimensional objects into his artwork which was something new. One of his most famous pieces is a mural-sized oil painting, Guernica.
Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is one the most popular painters in history. He lived a tragic life in poverty and madness only to take his own life after years of despair. Also, he was an ignored, unappreciated talent by the artworld’s standards at that time. Now his paintings are treasured and considered to be the beginning of the Impressionism movement.
M.C. Escher never considered himself to be a good artist. Little did he know that his mathmatically-based masterpieces would be considered among the top prints and posters sold at many gift shops. Salvador Dali is considered by many to be the most successful Surrealistic painter in history. When he passed in 1989, he left behind a body of work unlike any other artist. Surrealists painted realistic but unusual renditions of everyday objects, or any subject. Jackson Pollock (January 1912 – August 1956) was an American Abstract Expressionist. The painting Number 17A shows his most famous style. He developed drip painting and composed artwork on large canvases on his floor. These pieces are worth millions today. Pollock was a prominent New York figure of the 1940s and 1950s, but alcoholism led to his demise. This selection in the 20 Famous Artist Books was of print book has now been re-released. Paul Gauguin was an important artist in the post-Impressionism, Symbolist movement as a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramist, and writer. Gauguin was not appreciated until after his death. He is now recognized for his Synthetist style and use of color.
Girl with a Pearl Earring is perhaps Johannes Vermeer‘s most recognized painting. Vermeer (1632-1675) was a top painter of the Dutch Golden Age due to his detailed brushstrokes and use of lighting to create the atmosphere of middle-class life. Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985) was of Russian-French descent. He was an early Modernist who created works in many formats including paintings, stained glass, ceramics and prints. One art critic has labeled him as the quintessential Jewish artist of the twentieth century.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter (December 1863 – January 1944) whose intensely strong treatment of psychological themes greatly influenced German Expressionism in the early 20th century. In 1893 Munch created his best known work, The Scream.
