The dog shape emulated by these replicas just happens to be one of the many shapes of balloon sculptures by Koons.
It just happens to be the most popular one of his balloon sculptures, and the one that sold for the most ever by a living artist at auction at 58 million, like, wow. Yeah.
He makes other large balloon shapes as well besides the balloon dog. However, the dog is the coolest and most popular.

They also have this game called Balloon Dog Anatomy, which comes highly recommended, and would go great with a brand new, shiny metallic balloon dog figurine. 🙂
Why a dog? Well, It is Man’s best friend.. ?
This just happens to be the most basic balloon animal shape. You can make other balloon animals by adjusting the lengths between the twists, when you make a balloon sculpture.
What is cool about a dog is that people sometimes have the association with dogs, especially like little dogs, that they are excited to see people.
So, people project that association onto the balloon dog, maybe in a more subconscious way sometimes, when they first see the balloon dog.
For example, there is implied motion, just because it’s supposed to be a dog. E.g. wagging tail, jumping up and down, sniffing, licking, etc… + There is also excitement magnified by the reflective quality of the finish.
Also this shape has a nice symmetrical form that appeals to the eye, and as we all know, dogs are just awesome. ? This sculpture doesn’t need food or water, and you know the rest, lol…
Balloon sculptures are ethereal, and are given out at parties as a novelty item, usually only to be enjoyed for a short time. The balloon dog is part of a series by Koons where he has taken party favors and kids novelty themed subject matter, and made it large and pop-ish.
Balloon dog has blown up, just like you can blow up a balloon…. And… A balloon can pop, just like in pop art… 🙂
I made that lil saying up. lol… Hey Balloon Dog fans! I’m @yessickart, the webmaster for this site, and you can see my writings and art in the drop-down menu under @yessickart, and that’s my twitter username too! Follow me! Thanks…
Now…. More on Balloon Dog …Everything Else is about the Balloon Dog.
Now, back to the balloon dog, b/c it is really cool, too. Really cool, I mean, that’s what this entire page is about! lol 🙂
Info on Jeff Koons
Jeff Koons, whose ginormous balloon dog sculpture sold for the most ever by a living artist at 58 million, had a huge museum showing in NYC, where he lives and works, as well as in Paris and Barcelona in 2015: …like wow that must have been something else, I guarantee..
^This is the real collectible poster from the exhibition in Paris, at the Pompidou center.
This was a huge exhibit, with work spanning more than thirty years for Koons. The exhibition also showed in NYC at The Whitney, (Koons Exhibition Page on Whitney) and at the The Guggenheim Bilbao, which if you don’t know already, looks like This (Guggenheim Museum Image Search) and Was designed by architect Frank Gehry
Koons is a balloon artist at heart, well sometimes, he does other stuff too.
He just makes sculptures out of materials that enhance the visual quality of everyday things.
And they look like balloon sculptures, well, these do.
It reminds people of breathing. He compares his art to breathing, and etc…
And how a breath of air can be an inspiration.
He has a team of 35 or so sculptors that make the art in his studio. He moreso just comes up with ideas.
His large orange colored balloon dog sold at auction in 2015 for the most ever by a living artist at 58 million.
The previous record was 37 million by Gerhardt Richter.
With this sale, and a host of replicas of balloon dog being made, and with three huge shows, 2015 was a great year for Koons.

They have reflections
They are shiny, and you can sort of see reflections in them, so that adds a little personal touch because these little metallic balloon dog coin banks reflect things, almost like a mirror.
This effect was intended by Koons, and it is especially apparent on the larger balloon dog statues and sculptures. Some of the ones he makes in his studio are larger than some trailer homes, and the reason that they are big like that is so that a viewer can walk up to the sculpture and see themselves.
There is also distortion, almost like in a hall of mirrors, where different parts of the sculpture create different reflections. The reflections also give the viewer some sense of context, as the reflections you see in the metallic sculpture are of the surrounding environment, or whatever room in which it is placed.
That is why larger balloon dogs are just really cool to put in a semi-empty room, maybe with other art, or maybe perhaps combined with arcology, if you’d prefer.
However, you may have to get a larger sized balloon dog from Koons himself, if you want the metallic version… at least for now.
Or you can sculpt it yourself: Resin Sculpting & Casting Techniques (w/Cynthia Thornton) <–Just make it out of resin with this simple tutorial. Or you can just buy one for forty or so bucks here, and that’s a lot better than 58 millon, I think. 🙂

More on Koons
Koons is an American artist best known for his work reproducing ordinary objects.
His first name is actually Jeffery.
His balloon dogs are made of stainless steel and are finished with mirror-like surfaces.
The balloon dog is a metaphor for air, and the mirror finish allows the viewer to see their own reflection in the piece, which makes it more personal.
He went to the Art Institute of Chicago for his Undergrad.
And Maryland Institute college of Art for his MFA.
His work sells for tons of money.
Koons used to work at the membership desk at the Museum of Modern Art in New York when he was establishing himself as an artist.
Emerged in the 80’s in a generation of artists who were exploring what it was like to make art in a media saturated culture.
The Balloon Dog is Part of Jeff Koons’ Celebration Series where children’s party favors are recreated on a grand scale. Quite Large.
In 2013 Koons was awarded with the U.S. State Department’s Medal of Arts.

Koons and Other Artists
You can talk about Koons and how he is the idea guy, and really he just comes up with stuff. His crew of a few dozen artists make the works themselves.
There are other artists, many others, who do the same thing.
There are artists who pay other artists, so I’ve heard, to render huge masterpiece realistic figurative and landscape pieces, only for the main artist whose name it is under, just comes in, scribbles a few words on the canvas in paint, and calls it done.
A lot of the time with big name artists, the artist himself is either collaborating, or sometimes just giving orders.
There still are, however, many many artists and painters who are the only ones who can make what they make. They want it done right, so they have to do it themselves.
